Just a quick post about over-excitation:

For typical spring applied power-off holding brakes, there is a way to make a quicker disengagement (release) of the brake. Using your power supply, you can give a quick burst of power during the disengagement process. For small brakes, this could be for only about 250 msec or less. After the plate moves in to the coil body (compressing the springs and releasing the brake), you should drop your power down to normal. You have to make sure that you don't overheat the brake with too much power for too long.

After the brake releases, you actually don't need as much power to keep it disengaged. That is why many designers uses PWM (pulse width modulation) power control. This cuts down on both heat and power consumption.
